The Cincinnati Bengals had one of the worst NFL defenses in 2024 even with pass rusher Trey Hendrickson leading the league in sacks. Amid a contract stalemate between the two sides, Hendrickson has threatened not to take the field in September.

During an appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN NFL insider said that while the Bengals and Hendrickson have resumed contract negotiations in recent weeks, the All-Pro edge rusher is still vowing to sit out regular-season games without a new deal in place.

Hendrickson is seeking a multi-year extension that makes him one of the highest-paid NFL players. However, extensive reporting has made it clear that the four-time Pro Bowl selection isn’t seeking Myles Garrett money ($40 million AAV) but is instead looking for something in the ballpark of $35-plus million per year.

While the two sides are talking, significant roadblocks remain. The structure of the contract is a major sticking point. Hendrickson, who turns 31 years old in December, wants long-term financial security with his guaranteed money spread out over multiple seasons.

The Bengals’ front office, which has a history of not giving out much guaranteed money outside of the first year of a deal, is standing by its precedent in contract negotiations. So, while Cincinnati desperately wants to get this deal done, nothing is imminent.

Hendrickson’s firm threat to sit out regular-season games suggests that the two sides aren’t particularly close on a long-term deal. With Bengals training camp set to begin on Wednesday, July 23, it’s safe to presume Hendrickson will hold in at the start of camp.
