Trey Hendrickson was a beast last season, leading the NFL with 17.5 sacks, tying his previous career high for the Cincinnati Bengals All-Pro. Yet, now the 30-year-old wants a raise.
Hendrickson is set to earn $21 million, but the NFL’s highest-paid defender, Myles Garrett, makes $40 million per season. To no surprise, Hendrickson believes he deserves more.
He’s gone so far as to request a trade from the Bengals, and they granted him permission to find a new team, but that was at the outset of the offseason. Cincinnati hasn’t had any luck getting Hendrickson signed to an extension or finding a trade partner.
Now, according to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Bengals haven’t made any progress on extension talks with Hendrickson. They’re “not any closer to a deal.”
Yet, according to Schefter, the Bengals want to get Hendrickson signed to a “shorter deal.” Meanwhile, Hendrickson prefers a longer contract that provides more long-term financial security.
It remains to be seen which side folds first. Hendrickson has threatened to sit out of games without a new deal. Meanwhile, the Bengals have dug their toes in the sand too, not wanting to budge from the contract they already got Hendrickson to agree to back in 2023, before he had back-to-back 17.5 sack seasons.
