The New England Patriots wrapped up another day of practice on Monday, and once again, Drake Maye starred under center. According to NFL insider Peter Schrager of ESPN, there’s a lot of buzz beginning to build around the Patriots as they prepare for the 2025 season.
Selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye eventually earned the starting job for New England last season, and he showed off his sky-high potential in the process.
Despite playing on a desolate offensive unit, Maye threw for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns in 13 games of action, while also rushing for 421 yards and another pair of scores. Those strong numbers earned Maye a Pro Bowl selection, even though he didn’t play a full season’s worth of games.
After a busy offseason, Maye has a lot more talent around him on offense. Beyond that, he also is familiar with what it takes to succeed in the NFL moving forward. After a strong start to training camp, Schrager claimed that the hype surrounding Maye is real.
“I hear Drake Maye is just absolutely wonderful so far also,” Schrager said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “Again, it’s early, these might not be surprises, but when you get year two leaps, it means they spent the offseason working. I’m telling you, the juice out of Patriots camp right now about Drake Maye is very real.”
It’s not hard to see why there’s so much excitement surrounding Maye heading into his second season. If he was able to manage to keep the Patriots offense afloat last season, despite their clear lack of talent, what will he be able to do in 2025?
Of course, it’s worth noting that it’s only training camp, so it’s best not to get too amped over what Maye is doing currently. However, the optimism surrounding the team after a busy offseason appears to be well-vested with the first few practices in the books.
Over the next month or so, Maye and New England will continue laying the foundation for the 2025 season. And if all goes according to plan, they could surprise quite a few people during the upcoming campaign.
