There were a lot of questions raised when the Patriots hired Josh McDaniels for another stint in Foxboro, Mass., and naturally, fans turned to the NFL’s top insider for answers.
Loyal listeners of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Felger & Mazz” heard Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti question if the Krafts played a role in McDaniels’ return to New England. The offensive coordinator is popular among the fans and the front office, but he doesn’t have a coaching relationship with Mike Vrabel. Felger and Massarotti wondered if the Patriots head coach’s hands were tied, and he was forced to hire McDaniels over another candidate.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter appeared on the “WEEI Afternoons” on Wednesday and quickly addressed the issue.
“Mike Vrabel hired Josh McDaniels,” Schefter said.
After a follow-up from host Andy Hart, Schefter added that he believed that Vrabel interviewed McDaniels and hired him without any outside influence.
Felger can be stubborn like he was when he criticized Drake Maye for not attending Vrabel’s introductory news conference. So Schefter’s comments — on a rival radio network no less — might not convince Felger and Massarotti.
Fans and pundits might have to wait until there’s official word from all parties involved.
