The New York Giants have a surplus of edge rushers after taking Penn State’s Abdul Carter third overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Because of that depth, an NFL insider is proposing Big Blue trade one of their former first-round picks.
With Carter and Brian Burns slotted as the starting edge rushers, that leaves Kayvon Thibodeaux on the outside looking in. The Giants selected Thibodeaux with the No. 5 pick in the 2022 draft.
Thibodeaux was limited to 12 games in 2024 after undergoing surgery for a fractured scaphoid bone in his wrist. He finished the year with just 5.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits. The year before, Thibodeaux had a breakout season with 11.5 sacks.
Thibodeaux has two years left on his rookie contract, and it might benefit the Giants to see what his trade value might be. That’s why ESPN NFL insider Aaron Schatz believes the franchise should trade Thibodeaux.
“Yes, New York can use an edge rusher rotation and get plenty of value out of him. It can create a NASCAR-style package where one of its edge rushers moves inside on third down. But the Giants can also trade Thibodeaux to a contender that needs help on the edge, such as the Packers or the Lions, and probably get a Day 2 pick in return,” Schatz explains. “More draft capital would be a huge help for 2026 when they’ll be trying to find as many strong offensive players as possible to build around quarterback Jaxson Dart and wide receiver Malik Nabers.”
Thibodeaux played 75% of the defensive snaps in the 12 games he appeared in, and with the addition of Carter, that percentage could drop significantly. If the Giants can extract good value for him, it might be time to move on.
