After an injury-riddled season in 2024, the 2025 San Francisco 49ers have been one of the NFL’s best teams. Quarterback Mac Jones is a big reason why, helping lead the 49ers to a spotless 3-0 record. Brock Purdy meanwhile, has led the 49ers to a 1-1 record, and he’s currently injured.
Not only have the 49ers found more success with Jones under center rather than Purdy, he’s also producing better numbers across the board.
Do we have a QB controversy brewing in San Francisco? If so, it would be a really bad time, considering the 49ers just made Purdy their franchise QB when they committed to him with a five-year, $265 million contract extension back in May.
Yet, it’s also only been three games, which means fans need to pump the brakes on any thoughts about Jones being a long-term replacement for Purdy in San Francisco. After Sunday’s win, ESPN’s NFL reporter Adam Schefter echoed the same sentiment, that there is no QB controversy in the 49ers’ locker room.
“No, I still think it is absolutely Brock Purdy’s job. I don’t even think it’s a question,” Schefter said.

They just paid Brock Purdy and this is very much still his job" ~ @AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/mC2HfigzNJ

Three great games don’t wipe away the 44 starts Purdy has made for the 49ers across the past four seasons. Still, it’s nice to know that if Purdy is forced to miss any more time, then Kyle Shanahan’s team will still be in good hands, as long as Jones is healthy under center.
