Former NFL star Eric Dickerson has disclosed being told by a well-placed league source that teams were instructed not to draft Shedeur Sanders back in April.
Shedeur has been in the news for many other things lately, including snubbing a young fan who wanted an autograph. But, earlier this year, all people could talk about was the fact that he slid in the draft.
The former Colorado star was projected to be an early first-round pick and even had a custom draft room built for Night 1. Given the season he had with the Buffaoles in 2024, one could see why he expected to hear his name called early.
As fans are well aware of by now, Shedeur slipped all the way to the fifth round, with the Cleveland Browns selecting him at No. 144 overall, several picks after they selected Dillon Gabriel, whose comments Shedeur responded to in front of reporters on Thursday.
According to Dickerson, the Browns were not going to draft him, as the NFL told teams to stay away from Shedeur so he could be made an example of. However, someone called the team and told them not to go through with it, which is why they ended up taking him.
In a video making the rounds on Twitter/X, Dickerson tells Dan Patrick and Albert Breer that the league had a real mandate ordering teams to pass on Shedeur.
Check it out below:
“The NFL told teams, ‘Do not draft him. We’re gonna make an example out of him,” the former running back said. “Somebody called the Browns and said, Don’t do that. Draft him’.
“Because they wasn’t gonna draft him either.”

It’s been claimed in many rumors that the NFL teams colluded to tank Shedeur’s stock, with one fan even suing the league over it. But this latest claim suggests they would have let him slide through the whole thing.
