The NFL gave fair warning to the College Football Playoff. The most popular sports league in the United States told CFP leaders that it had no interest in adjusting its schedule to accommodate college football. Now, we’re seeing the results of that threat as the NFL begins to release its 2025 schedule.
The 2025 College Football Playoff will hold three of its four opening-round games on Saturday, Dec. 20. The fourth (or first, depending on how you view it) opening-round game will be held on Friday, Dec. 19. But on Monday, the NFL announced plans to also hold a pair of games on Dec. 20 featuring some of its premier franchises. The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will face NFC East rival Washington, while NFC North rivals Green Bay and Chicago are set to face off with one another.

“Those opening-round games are scheduled for December 20 and 21 this year. The latter date, as you surely know from consulting your Farmer’s Almanac, falls on a Saturday, and the NFL historically schedules games on that day, which is set up to be Week 16 this year. (Last season, the NFL scheduled two games on its Week 16 Saturday: the Bengals-Steelers on NBC and the Bills-Chargers on Peacock.),” John Ourand of Puck reported last year. It’s the same deal the following year, too: The C.F.P.’s opening-round games are on Friday and Saturday.
“Multiple sources have told me that executives in the league office were not happy about C.F.P.’s chutzpah in scheduling games that day, and they have been left scratching their heads as to why C.F.P. would encroach on their veritable turf.”
Last year, the NFL also had a pair of games coincide with the College Football Playoff. The Baltimore Ravens beat the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Kansas City Chiefs downed the Houston Texans on Dec. 21. On the same day, the CFP held three of its opening-round games.
So the College Football Playoff had to know this was coming. But it doesn’t appear the NFL has much sympathy or care for the college game.
