An anonymous NFL general manager blasts the Pittsburgh Steelers’ trade for veteran cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
It has been highly debated who won the blockbuster trade between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. But one anonymous NFL GM believes it will be the Dolphins who come out on the winning side of the deal if the Steelers do try to replace former safety Minkah Fitzpatrick with Jalen Ramsey.
“Ramsey at safety is intriguing to me, but not at that money,” the general manager told me. “He is still a starting corner, but again, his performance will not equal his pay,” Eric Williams of Fox Sports writes.
It’s unclear what Pittsburgh’s plan for Ramsey will be. Many have speculated the team will move him to safety to help fill the hole left by Fitzpatrick with other capable cornerbacks Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr. on the roster.
The 30-year-old has also already entertained the idea of making the position switch later in his career.
“I wouldn’t have any problems moving to safety,” Ramsey said back in 2021.
However, that doesn’t mean Ramsey is going to make the switch this season. As part of the deal, the Steelers are also giving Ramsey a $1.5 million raise for the 2025 season, making his salary $26.6 million.
That would be an overpay for a full-time safety, and Ramsey still proved to have plenty of gas left in the tank at cornerback last season, recording 60 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed.
The anonymous GM thinks if the Steelers’ plan is to move Ramsey to safety, they should have just kept Fitzpatrick.
“Fitzpatrick is a better safety — younger, cheaper and less drama,” the GM added. “I give Miami kudos for rectifying a mistake contract extension from a year ago.”
Ramsey may play some safety in 2025, but it’s unlikely he’ll make the permanent switch this year. If that is the case, Pittsburgh will have to take a long, hard look at his contract.
Ramsey is scheduled to earn $25.033 million in 2026, $26.8 million in 2027 and $36.168 million in 2028. None of those salaries are guaranteed.
