Browns roster is still a work in progress

The Cleveland Browns wide receiver room is something to behold. It’s not good. Going into the NFL offseason, the WR corps had a ton of question marks. Outside of wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, the rest do not inspire a ton of confidence.

Cedric Tillman has shown flashes, but injuries have derailed any momentum he gained. David Bell is coming off a hip injury and hasn’t been productive. Jamari Thrash doesn’t have a big enough sample size to be judged and Diontae Johnson has been more of a liability the last two years.

The team didn’t address the room in free agency or the draft, so it appears that the Browns are content with it, despite ESPN noting receiver as the team’s biggest roster hole:

Jerry Jeudy is great and just fine as a No. 1 receiver. It’s everything behind him that’s the issue. The No. 2 receiver is Cedric Tillman, who had only 339 receiving yards in 11 games last season. The No. 3 option is veteran Diontae Johnson, who had a strange 2024 in which he played for three teams.

However, with the Jacksonville Jaguars releasing wide receiver Gabe Davis earlier Wednesday morning, should Cleveland kick the tires?

Is the Browns wide receiver room atrocious outside of Jeudy? Yes. Could the Browns benefit from the services of Davis? Sure. However, Davis isn’t someone that the Browns should be blowing up the phone for.

Davis’s tenure in Jacksonville was underwhelming as he never was able to match his production for the contract he was given. Davis has always been a WR3/WR4 throughout his career, which isn’t a bad thing but people believe he was due for a breakout role after the 2021 divisional round playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs when he was still playing for the Buffalo Bills.

Davis has speed and is a good enough blocker, but his hands leave a lot to be desired. Cleveland could potentially sign Davis to a 1 year deal for minimal money, as they did with Johnson, but the Browns could use a better option.

Davis is not a bad player, but he’s not someone who changes things for Cleveland. The free agent options are not encouraging either, but the team could always trade for one or wait until cut-down day after the preseason in their hunt for a receiver. Signing Davis to join the WR room wouldn’t inspire a ton of confidence because of the number of question marks it would still present that Davis does not fix.
