I’ve reviewed the stats, and my main takeaway from Week 5 is that the NFL remains a glorious, unpredictable fever dream. Matthew Stafford is clinging to the #1 spot, but the real story is Baker Mayfield breathing down his neck with a chaotic energy that screams either “Super Bowl champ” or “drove the team bus into a lake.” Meanwhile, Dak Prescott rocketed up the board, playing so efficiently that Cowboys fans are cautiously feeling hope… always a dangerous game in the NFL.
Speaking of the Cowboys, as you know, this is a sneakers column, so we’re talking about some kicks we spotted this week in the tunnels. My Nike pick of the week is Cowboys WR George Pickens wearing the Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Cave Stone and Black’ that came out a couple of weeks ago on Nike.com.
Clearly, they were a good luck charm: He caught two of four targets for 57 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 37-22 win over the Jets.

These are the Light Orewood Brown/Phantom/Muslin/Ridgerock colorway, which should be dropping on Nike.com any second now…

Of course, for every rise, there must be a fall. Justin Herbert’s stock plummeted after a rough outing, and Josh Allen took a tumble, reminding us that his brand of quarterbacking includes both otherworldly talent and the occasional, heart-stopping turnover. The week’s best moment belonged to Trevor Lawrence, who scored a game-winning touchdown by falling down twice before scrambling into the end zone—the least athletic, most inspiring play of the season. A close second for sheer weirdness goes to Jordan Love and the Packers, who played to a 40-40 tie, a score so rare it has its own nerdy nickname: a ‘scorigami.’
Down in the league’s basement, a moment of silence for Cooper Rush, who made his debut by throwing three interceptions and zero touchdowns. Someone has to be #32, and he really went for it. Until next week, when all these rankings will inevitably be thrown in a blender again.
That’s enough talk about the field, right? We’re here to chat about outfits and kicks. Alas, here are the best outfits and kicks in the NFL this past week via the folks at SoleRetriver.
