DK Metcalf has always done things his own way. The newly minted Pittsburgh Steelers star is back in the headlines, not just for his blockbuster $150 million contract, but for now the internet has latched onto something far stranger, his downright bizarre daily diet.
Forget protein shakes, calorie tracking, and carefully prepped meals. Metcalf, one of the NFL’s most physically gifted wide receivers, fuels himself on candy. Lots of it. He eats one meal a day, downs a single coffee, and munches through three to four bags of candy every day. That includes Skittles Gummies, Lifesavers Creations, and other sugar-loaded treats that would put most dietitians into a panic.
While this wild routine sounds like an off-season indulgence, Metcalf actually laid it all out back in 2023. In a candid conversation from that year, which has now resurfaced, the former Seahawks star described exactly how he structures his day. He wakes up, hits two workouts, grabs a coffee from Starbucks, and holds off on eating anything substantial until dinner around 8 or 9 p.m.
The candy comes in during the afternoon, usually around 4:30. At that point, he orders his go-to favorites, a combination of Skittles Gummies, Lifesavers Creations, and other sugary snacks, and pairs it with a bottle of water. That tide of sugar tides him over until his only real meal of the day.

• Four full bags of Gummies
• A whole bag of Skittles
• One coffee a day
• One actual meal at 9M; the only real food he eats in a day— MLFootball (@_MLFootball) June 6, 2025
While nutrition experts would likely advise against this kind of regimen, the results speak for themselves. Since entering the league in 2019 as a second-round pick, Metcalf has racked up yards, touchdowns, and highlight-reel plays. Now, as a Steeler, he’s locked into a deal that pays him $60 million guaranteed, including a $30 million signing bonus, per Pro Football Talk. His salary cap hit jumps from $11 million in 2024 to over $41 million by 2029.
The Steelers can opt out after 2026 without paying any new money, though they’d absorb an $18 million dead cap hit from his bonus. Until then, Metcalf will be cashing in, and likely still running on gummies.
Whether you find it outrageous, hilarious, or oddly impressive, but no other NFL star has a diet that sounds like it came from a vending machine.
