NFL games will look slightly different this season, and fans got their first glimpse at the Hall of Fame Game when the league unveiled its Virtual Measurement System.

One of the most notable changes in recent years will take away the traditional chain system.

It was announced in April that the league will now use Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology as the primary way to measure the line to gain.

Speed was the main reason why the NFL wanted to change from the chain system to the virtual measurement system.

Fans got yet another look at it during the Ginats-Patriots preseason game on Thursday.

Unfortunately, the new system leads to a bunch of standing around by the players and refs. It took almost 50 seconds for a decision to be made before they got to the next play.

“The new NFL virtual measurement system is an embarrassment,” one post said on X.

“Something that would help speed the process up is if they had a chip in the ball, like what’s the case in the various spring leagues like the UFL/USFL. So that the refs know where to properly spot the ball to further increase the accuracy of these types of situations,” a second fan wrote.

“Yet again, the NFL misread the room. We want technology to assist in spotting the ball. The chain gang was just fine to measure the spot. The measuring was not the issue; it was about the bad spot,” a third fan commented.

“Problem was never with the chains. It was and will continue to be where the Referee spots the ball at,” a fourth fan stated.
