A report claiming Amari Cooper was walking away from his NFL career following a nine-year stint in the league had fans freaking out on social media.

Rumors of Cooper’s retirement spread quickly after a spoof X account named Adam Schefler posted the following on Friday morning:

“After nine NFL seasons, former Bills, Browns, Cowboys, and Raiders WR Amari Cooper has decided to retire,” it read.

The tweet had racked up over 150 million views at the time of writing, thanks to some help from ESPN’s Cowboys correspondent Todd Archer retweeting it, but has since been community noted.

The long and short of it? No, Cooper has not retired. The wide receiver remains a free agent and is looking for a new team after splitting his 2024 campaign between the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills.

He played eight games for Buffalo last term, recording 297 yards and two touchdowns, and will likely be playing elsewhere in 2025, but social media was completely fooled.

“Damn that sucks. He was still solid,” one fan lamented.

“I really respect that decision. He clearly didn’t have anything left no matter where he was! Wishing Amari the best in the next chapter!!” someone else said.

Amari Cooper Didn’t Hit His Usual Heights Last Season

Amari Cooper is one of the best available wideouts on the market at the moment. The 31-year-old has logged 10,003 receiving yards and 64 touchdowns across stints with the Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Browns, and Bills.

The fourth overall pick out of Alabama in 2015, Cooper had a down season in 2024, struggling with injuries and inconsistency, as he finished with fewer than 600 receiving yards for the first time in his career.

While there were rumors suggesting he might call curtains, he hasn’t delivered any such announcement.
