Diving into some of the reasons why Abdul Carter should be the selection at No.2
The Cleveland Browns have to address multiple needs within the next two to three months in both free agency and the NFL Draft, but regardless of what happens with Myles Garrett, one position and specific player should be the focus at pick number 2 based on multiple factors: Penn State DE Abdul Carter.
Let’s look at some of the reasons why Carter should be the “no-brainer” selection at No.2 overall.
When a team has a top draft pick and a perceived need at a spot that’s considered to be “weak” like the QB class in 2025, it’s vital to not force the selection. Abdul Carter has the potential to be the best player in this draft class and Cleveland is in prime position to lock him up at pick No.2.
The Browns are likely already planning on acquiring a veteran to lead the team in 2025, so why pigeonhole themselves into drafting a sub-par quarterback in the top 5?
One thing that hasn’t been discussed enough is the fact that Carter’s athleticism, production, and instincts might have molded him into the type of player who comes around about as often as Halley’s Comet.
There’s a decent chance that Abdul Carter could be a more athletic version of Micah Parsons at the NFL level.
The Browns have been searching for a player who could be a consistent force alongside Garrett over the past handful of seasons. Olivier Vernon, Jadeveon Clowney, and Ogbo Okoronkwo have been fine since 2020 but Carter would be lightyears ahead of them in terms of overall potential with Cleveland.
Heading into next season, it’s very plausible to say that the team is built for a veteran QB like Kirk Cousins or Russell Wilson to lead the team to a playoff spot rather than a rookie.
Aside from “reaching” to draft Shedeur Sanders or Cameron Ward with a top pick in this class, it could also hold them back from winning right now which is what they need to do.
Though it’s unlikely based on the financial side of things, Abdul Carter would be the top option available for the Browns to be the long-term replacement at defensive end in the event of a Garrett trade.
