As Browns and other teams seek more information before the NFL draft, Shedeur Sanders continues recent trend
“Nothing gold can stay.” Whether you know the quote from the movie “The Outsiders” or the poem by Robert Frost, the saying describes much of the world as it continues to spin on. Those who hold on to “when I was a kid” or “the NFL I remember” will be frustrated as changes happen.
Recently, quarterbacks have begun to opt out of participating in much or all of the NFL combine. We also saw WR Marvin Harrison Jr. do the same in last year’s event. With the Cleveland Browns on the search for a QB, the combine schedule was focused on that position.
With the second overall pick, QBs Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward have really separated themselves as the only options early in this year’s NFL draft. While we don’t have word on Ward’s participation, we did get this interestingly worded report that Sanders will not participate in the on-field activities:
Whether his film is able to “speak loudly” or not, NFL teams like as much information as possible and Sanders has skipped multiple chances to let them see him perform since the season ended.
Given that the first three picks last year (Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye) didn’t participate, it will unlikely impact where Sanders is drafted. It might annoy some teams, media and fans (hence the opening line of this piece) but Sanders and Ward) have very little benefit to participate this week.
Given that Ward didn’t play his team’s entire bowl game, while Sanders did, it would not be surprising if the Miami QB also decides to rest on his film (and hope it will “speak loudly”).
Do you think it matters that Sanders isn’t participating? Would you change your mind if Ward also sits out?
