Are you, like most football fans, sick and tired of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes constantly flopping and seemingly always getting rewarded for it? Well you’re in luck! Because it now seems like the NFL is prepared to address the problem.
Mahomes isn’t the only quarterback to flop. But as rules to protect quarterbacks have evolved, it seems he is the most frequent and egregious violator. His flop against the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round was so bad that even Mahomes himself could not defend it.
“I would say the only one I felt like I probably did too much was the one on the sideline where I didn’t get the flag,” Patrick Mahomes said on The Drive on 96.5 The Fan this week. “The ref saw it and didn’t throw a flag, I understood it immediately and know that I probably shouldn’t have done that.
“But at the same time, the one everyone is talking about where I fell down, I was just trying to get out of the way from getting smoked by the defensive lineman running. So, I’ll try to keep doing that and not take those hits, because that’s a smart way to stay in the football game.”
At some point, the league needs to step in and make a change for the integrity of the game. And it appears that point is now. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the NFL is planning on expanding replay for next season in order to assist with plays involving hits to quarterbacks who are sliding or going out of bounds.
NFL replay assist is expected to expand this offseason into plays that could include the quarterback slide. Replay assist came into question last Saturday, when Patrick Mahomes scrambled, slid beneath two Texans’ defenders and still drew a 15-yard penalty on Houston. https://t.co/PyWZGslCi5

The league already expanded replay assist for the 2024 season. The additions allowed replay to review fouls for hits heading out of bounds, blows to the head of a quarterback and elements of intentional grounding. Now it appears the league is ready to create an air-tight system to prevent the flopping epidemic from expanding any further.
