Don’t panic, RedZone fans. That’s pretty much what Roger Goodell said, right before hinting at something a whole lot bigger.
NFL fans clinging to their precious RedZone Sundays can exhale. The product you know and binge every Sunday isn’t going anywhere. But in a surprising turn, Goodell casually dropped some news that could reshape Saturdays too.
Appearing live on SportsCenter, Goodell confirmed that ESPN’s recent acquisition of the RedZone name won’t affect how NFL RedZone looks or feels. “It will be the NFL RedZone. I don’t think fans will see any difference to that,” he said from the NFL Network’s broadcast studio in L.A. But then came the real headline.
Goodell didn’t just stop at reassuring NFL fans. He went one step further, and it was a big one. He revealed that ESPN now owns the RedZone brand outright, and they’re free to do with it as they please.
“ESPN purchased the RedZone name and they will be able to utilize that for other sports, college football and other things,” Goodell said. “I think that could be an exciting thing for our fans also to see a RedZone, maybe in college football or other sports.”

There it is. College Football RedZone.
Honestly, it’s about time. Saturdays are jammed with games. Flipping through five different networks to keep up with all the action is a headache. A single stream jumping from red zone to red zone across the country? That’s football bliss. And now it’s finally on the table.
Of course, it helps that the NFL now owns a ten percent stake in ESPN. If this new idea clicks with college football fans, the NFL will cash in, too. So this move isn’t just about serving the fans; it’s a strategic play for the league itself.
There’s still no official word from ESPN about launching a College Football RedZone. But the door is wide open now. And with Saturdays as chaotic as they are, it might just be the smartest move ESPN makes all year.
If Goodell’s slip on SportsCenter was a leak, it might be the best one fans have heard in a long time.
