Travis Hunter might’ve had his primary position revealed some two-plus months before the 2025 NFL Draft.
… Might have.
The league on Thursday revealed all 329 prospects invited to the NFL Scouting Combine and in doing so listed the Colorado product with the defensive backs. It means Hunter, one of the top prospects in the class, will test and compete against other defensive backs rather than wide receivers.
The Scouting Combine invite doesn’t cement Hunter as a cornerback at the next level, but it’s nevertheless a noteworthy development.
It’s unclear what position Hunter prefers to play in the NFL, though some of the top draft evaluators are split on their preferences. For example, NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah believes Hunter should prioritize wide receiver while The Athletic’s Dane Brugler thinks Hunter has a higher ceiling at cornerback.
The Patriots have been labeled a potential landing spot for Hunter given New England holds the fourth overall pick. It’s no certainty Hunter will be on the board when No. 4 rolls around, but if he is, his desired position could play a pivotal role.
New England might prefer Hunter play wide receiver since it has a glaring needs at the receiver position and need to put talent around Drake Maye. On the other side, Second Team All-Pro Christian Gonzalez headlines the Patriots cornerback room, which seems to be in a better standing moving forward.
The NFL Scouting Combine begins Feb. 24.
