NFL combine Day 1: Browns rumors, notes and more
Dawgs By Nature Dawgs By Nature

Myles Garrett trade or extension? Matthew Stafford interest? Drafting a QB for sure? Checking in with rumors from the NFL combine

The biggest NFL convention has kicked off with the NFL combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. With a few exceptions, every team has their coaching staff and front office here (Damon Wolfe and I are on the ground covering the event for DBN), every NFL agent has a presence during the week and as many media members as possible (literally ran out of media parking passes with only a small percent of media getting them) will descend on Indy this week.

For those who are new to my coverage of the event, the NFL combine is one of the few times a year when I get to be face-to-face with a lot of my sources. While those are rarely meetings, I am able to bounce around after hours to put pieces of a puzzle together. To be clear, my sources are not at the level of Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry or HC Kevin Stefanski.

Instead, I’ve been blessed to meet a ton of people from around the league in the 13 years I’ve been covering the event. Many of those people have moved up and around the NFL which provides a lot of context for things. In the end, my goal is not to break any news but to inform readers about what I’m hearing, the noise around the league and more.

Normally, I wait until Wednesday morning to publish this piece but this year will be a little different. Why? More info before the combine led to early conversations at the event. I will make an update to this piece Wednesday morning with more but felt there was enough information to at least get the ball rolling.

What I’m hearing so far:

  • Myles Garrett will not be traded
  • Myles Garrett will not be extended, most likely
  • Myles Garrett will get his current contract ripped up and a whole new deal signed
  • This will be unlikely to happen in the near future and is probably weeks away from happening
  • Browns are unlikely to be in on a Matthew Stafford trade
  • The team is interested to some level but does not believe they are realistic options for a trade and new contract for Stafford (as most understood from the start)
  • Despite a recent report, Cleveland is not locked into taking a quarterback second overall
  • Somewhat surprising to me, Cam Ward’s fit with the Browns new offense is not a concern and they would be interested in selecting him second overall
  • The Browns love Travis Hunter but positional value and other options could allow them to pass on him
  • Have heard very little about Cleveland’s interesting/thoughts on Abdul Cart which might speak even louder than what I am hearing
  • No surprise but the Browns are not expected to be heavily involved in NFL free agency
  • As always, Berry is very...
