As the 2025 NFL Draft draw nearer, it’s becoming increasing clear that Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward is going to be the first quarterback off the board. Ward had been battling Colorado superstar Shedeur Sanders for the spot, and the general consensus is now that Sanders will slot in solidly as QB2 behind Ward in April’s draft in Green Bay.
But general consensus does not mean unanimity, and all it takes is for one team to feel differently for the order to change. For instance, a team could fall in line with the belief of NFL analyst Greg Cosell. Coselll recently stated that Ward was every bit as good as the quarterbacks taken in the first round in the 2024 NFL Draft. But he does not have Sanders as his QB2.

Instead, that honor goes to Louisville Cardinals quarterback Tyler Shough, who has been flying up draft boards of late. Shough is 25 years old and recently completed his seventh year of college football with his third team. He began his career as a top-100 recruit with the Oregon Ducks, but later found his way to Texas Tech before ending his career with the Cards.
Despite Shough’s advanced age (he’s nearly three full years older than Ward and 2.5 years older than Sanders), Cosell is enamored with the signal caller.
“To me the next best tape (behind Ward) of a college quarterback that I saw was Tyler Shough from Louisville,” he said. “I was fascinated by this kid … he looks the part of an NFL quarterback. He’s got clean mechanics. He stayed on the mid line. You know, these are the little details that I look for.”
Cosell noted that for NFL general managers told him they are not concerned by Shough’s age. And the arm talent is undeniable. But we’ve seen this story before. Shough played seven seasons of college his football. His final season came in an offense-friendly conference in the ACC (which Ward played in as well) and even then he struggled in games against Virginia, Stanford and Kentucky.
Maybe Shough becomes a quality NFL starter. Cosell was high on both Jayden Daniels and Justin Herbert before their rookie seasons. So he does have an eye for talent. But this one feels highly unlikely given the evidence at hand.
