The big guys are getting an award of their own
During playoff season, I wrote about how offensive tackle Dion Dawkins of the Buffalo Bills pitched the idea for a yearly award for offensive lineman. Basically, Dawkins’ argument was that other positions get a “best of the best” award that offensive lineman deserved that same recognition.
The NFL seemed to agree with the idea, as the award has been created, giving fans one more thing to pay attention to during the 2025 NFL season. Interestingly enough, this award will be chosen by former offensive lineman, providing credibility to an award granted to a position that many struggle to evaluate.
For New York Jets fans, the offensive line was a bright spot in 2024, so maybe it isn’t too far-fetched that a Jet could be in the conversation for the first ever “Protector of the Year.” In particular, the play of rookie offensive tackle Olu Fashanu shined quite bright such that a step forward in 2025 could give him a chance at consideration. While I think it will be difficult for a guard to receive the award, John Simpson and Alijah Vera-Tucker also played extremely well in 2024 with run and pass blocking grades over 70 according to PFF, potentially giving them a remote chance if they were to continue their ascents.
What do you think? Yay or nay to this new award?
