Field Gulls
The Seattle Seahawks are within touching distance of the postseason after a two-year absence. All they have to do is win one of their final three games and they’re all set for more football in January. The Seahawks haven’t lost consecutive games all season, so a full-on collapse would be a shocker despite a difficult stretch to end the year.
There is, however, a worst case scenario in which the Seahawks find themselves on the outside looking in for another season. This is not a doom-and-gloom post, but it is nevertheless informative in case the Seahawks do lose to the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night and you start wondering what it’ll take for Seattle to miss the playoffs.
The NFC North will determine whether or not the Seahawks could potentially have an all-timer of a collapse out of the playoffs. Despite what the title says, there are a couple of outcomes that would result in Seattle missing the postseason, but let’s go with the simplest one.
That’s it. In this scenario, the Seahawks would be 11-6 but have an inferior record to the 11-5-1 Packers, and they’d have an inferior conference record to the 11-6 Bears and 11-6 Lions in a Wild Card tiebreaker.
All of this is to say that I’d feel great about the Seahawks being in the playoffs even if they lose the Rams game. What is a near certainty is that losing the Rams game would be the end of their NFC West hopes, unfortunately. If the Seahawks win, then there’s no reason to even come back to this article. I think we prefer that outcome.
