A slow-mo video of Los Angeles Chargers star Rashawn Slater going down with an injury in training has surfaced online following reports of the player being carted off.
The Pro Bowl left tackle was forced to exit Thursday’s practice after falling without any contact in an 11 vs. 11 drill. He was blocking outside linebacker Tui Tuipulotu at the time, but the video below shows him going down before he was rushed.
He immediately grabbed his left leg and remained on the ground.
According to ESPN, Slater stayed down with an athletic trainer while Derwin James Jr. and Denzel Perryman prayed. He was eventually helped to his feet, but could not put any weight on the leg.
The two-time Pro Bowler was approached by his teammates after being placed into a cart and was said to be noticeably frustrated, throwing his helmet and slamming a fist onto the cart.
Rashawn Slater signed a four-year, $114 million contract extension with the Chargers less than two weeks ago, which guarantees him $92 million, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman value offensive linemen highly as they prefer a rush-first offense. It was no secret that they felt the pairing of Slater and second-year star Joe Alt was the best in the NFL.
They also brought in Mekhi Becton in free agency this year, making expectations even higher.
Should Slater miss significant time next season, Alt could be moved to left tackle, while Trey Pipkins moves to the right, having started there in 2022 and 2023.
Thursday started quite brightly for the franchise, with wide receiver Keenan Allen making his return to practice after spending last season with the Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, Rashawn Slater’s injury has put a damper on things, and the Chargers will hope that the problem isn’t as bad as first feared.
