The New York Jets are reportedly trying out a pair of new quarterbacks following a key development regarding the position.
Justin Fields is understood to have struggled in training recently. However, of more concern is the fact that his backup, Tyrod Taylor, will miss the remainder of training camp after undergoing a minor procedure in his knee.
Taylor could be ready for Week 1, according to head coach Aaron Glenn. But, in the meantime, the team has brought in QBs Nathan Peterman and C.J. Beathard for workouts, per ProFootballTalk.
Peterman, a former fifth-round pick, spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons as part of their practice squad. Interestingly, he competed with Taylor for the Buffalo Bills’ starting job as a rookie in 2017 and made four starts.
Beathard, also drafted in 2017, re-signed from the Miami Dolphins squad and ended 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has made 32 career appearances, 13 of them starts, having made final rosters for the San Francisco 49ers and the Jags.
Neither saw the field last season, having last played in 2023.
Meanwhile, the New York Jets have Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook on their depth chart, listed as third and fourth, respectively.
Fields, who gave a good account of himself with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, signed a two-year deal worth $40 million with NY as a free agent this offseason.
The 26-year-old started six games for the Steelers before being replaced by Russell Wilson, winning four of those games.
Wilson has also moved to a New York team this year, joining the Giants as a free agent.
Fields will likely be under center for his new team when they face Pittsburgh in their Week 1 opener on September 7. The Jets are hoping that he hits the ground running.
