New York Jets Sign 27-Year-Old Quarterback After Injuries Strike

Last offseason, the New York Jets wanted a different quarterback after two seasons with Aaron Rodgers. Thus, they decided to take a chance on former first-round pick Justin Fields, signing him to a two-year, $40 million contract.

They also retained veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor, who’s started four games this season. Now, both Fields and Taylor are hurt, so the Jets have been forced to turn to the last man standing, undrafted rookie Brady Cook.

But now the Jets have added another quarterback to the organization by signing Hendon Hooker to the practice squad. Hooker has some familiarity with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who was the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator for the first two years of Hooker’s career in Motown.

Hooker, 27, was the Lions’ third-round selection, as the 68th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Yet, he didn’t play in his rookie season while recovering from an ACL tear suffered in his final year at Tennessee in college.

Hooker spent some time with the Panthers’ practice squad earlier this season, but he was let go on November 4. Now, he’ll get a chance with the Jets, where he could be just one snap away from seeing the field.

He’s had limited experience in the NFL thus far, completing 6-of-9 passes for 62 yards across three appearances with the Lions in 2024.

The Jets also added defensive tackle Payton Page to the active roster after placing safety Tony Adams on injured reserve.
