The New York Jets’ Justin Fields era has already seen a setback following a concerning practice incident on Thursday morning.
Fields, who joined the Jets after a positive campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, is expected to be QB1 in NY in 2025 and has started training camp with the team.
But the 25-year-old was carted off the field on Thursday morning, prompting some speculation. Fortunately, the Jets have since revealed that his injury is not a major one, with the quarterback having dislocated a toe.
Head coach Aaron Glenn said the team was still gathering information when he spoke to reporters.
“We’re still gathering information,” he said. “It could be something minor, or it could be more serious. We’re hopeful.”
Initial reports suggested that it was a possible dislocation rather than a fracture. The Jets have since confirmed this, following an evaluation, noting that the player is now day-to-day.
Veteran backup Tyrod Taylor stepped in for Justin after he left the field on Thursday, but the Jets could look to other options should it turn out that Fields isn’t available to suit up in Week 1.
While that is unlikely, Kirk Cousins’ name has already been mentioned in rumors, with the Atlanta Falcons naming Michael Penix Jr. their starter for 2025.
Barring another setback, Fields will enter the 2025 season as the Jets’ main quarterback option. The team made sure to note that he has avoided serious injury, suggesting he will be ready to play their opener.
Following a promising spell in Pittsburgh that saw him complete a career-high 65.8 percent of his passes, the Jets are looking to Fields as their leading man on the back of their failed Aaron Rodgers experiment.
Here’s to a quick recovery
