Just four days after being carted off the field with an injury, Justin Fields was a full-go at practice with the New York Jets on Monday.

Fields worked exclusively with the first offense and took all of the snaps during 11-on-11 drills. Jets coach Aaron Glenn provided a somewhat confusing take on his QB1, though.

“He was limited, but he was limited the way we wanted him to be limited,” Glenn (sort of) explained.

Perhaps Glenn was alluding to Fields basically staying in the pocket and mainly throwing short routes during the first day of contact and full pads at training camp.

No doubt, the Jets wanted to keep their new starting quarterback out of harm’s way after he broke a toe last week. The injury occurred after a massive lineman stepped on Fields’ foot during 11-on-11 drills.

Since mobility and making plays on the run — scripted and off script — are a huge part of the 26-year-old’s game, a broken toe is no small thing. But considering the fear that swept through Gang Green’s universe when he originally went down with what appeared to be a non-contact injury Thursday — ACL? MCL? Hamstring? Achilles?– a broken toe wasn’t so bad after all.

That’s especially so with the newcomer — who signed a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason — back at practice so soon after the injury.

Justin Fields has ‘some things he’s got to get better at,’ Jets coach says

Though Fields did take part in 7-on-7 drills Saturday, it was a big deal that he replaced Tyrod Taylor with the ones for the entirety of the 11-on-11 play Monday. Though everyone was pleased with that fact, it didn’t stop Glenn from pointing out that Fields has work to do before the Jets open their season Sept. 7 against Aaron Rodgers — remember him? — and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“There are some things he did today that I was very pleased with, but there’s also some things he’s got to get better at, too. He knows that,” the coach said. “Every day I just look forward to him maturing and getting better.”

In Taylor, the Jets have a $6.8 million insurance policy at quarterback. The popular 36-year-old is in his second season with the Jets, after serving as Rodgers’ backup last year.
