Last season, a number of notable NFL players were victims of home invasions linked to a crime ring known for targeting pro athletes. Now, a member of the New York Jets has ended up at the center of a scary armed robbery orchestrated by thieves who stalked them from New York City.

Being a professional athlete obviously has its share fair of perks, but there are also plenty of downsides that come with being a public figure known for making millions of dollars a year.

Last year, the FBI got involved after notable names including Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow, Ja Morant, and Luka Doncic were all targeted in the string of home invasions believed to be orchestrated by a crime ring known as the South American Theft Group (seven people from Chile were recently arrested and charged in connection to the spree).

It goes without saying that’s not the only way pro athletes can end up at the center of a robbery.

Plenty of guys who make a living playing a sport use some of their salary to purchase pricy watches, chains, and other attention-grabbing bling, which has led to multiple incidents where they’ve been targeted by armed robbers.

Rams WR Demarcus Robinson had $150,000 in jewelry taken from him at gunpoint in a hotel in 2023, while 49ers RB WR Ricky Pearsall had to delay the start of his rookie season last year after he was shot while scuffling with a teenager who tried to jack his Rolex.

According to NJ.com, police are currently investigating a similar crime involving an unidentified New York Jets player in Morristown, New Jersey last Sunday, who they say was with another victim when they were robbed by three men with guns who hopped out of an SUV before making off with cash and unspecified “personal items.”

Investigators say they have reason to believe the perpetrators spotted the player in Manhattan before following them across the Hudson River to New Jersey prior to pulling off the robbery. It doesn’t seem like they have any suspects as things currently stand, and while it’s been described as an “isolated incident,” you have to imagine it’ll be putting other athletes on edge.
