The biggest “cheat code,” so to speak, in sports is having good ownership. The value of having an owner who not only invests financially, but also hires and empowers intelligent people, cannot be overstated. It’s why organizations like the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are consistent winners and the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders are, well, not that.
Enter New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. Johnson purchased the Jets in 2000 and since that point, they’ve won just 173 games, which ranks 25th in the NFL and nearly 100 victories behind the New England Patriots in first. The Jets are currently in a 14-year playoff drought, which is double the Carolina Panthers in second with a seven-year drought.
Coaches have changed. Players have changed. Front office members have changed. But the one thing that has, notably, not changed is Johnson. Ultimately, it is very hard to win in the NFL when your team owner doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Until now, Johnson has somehow managed to elude criticism which fell at the feet of Aaron Rodgers, Robert Saleh, Adam Gase, Joe Douglas and several others. But that’s no longer the case.
“Absolutely, I have to look in the mirror, and I have to be a better owner,” Johnson said Monday after introducing new coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey. “And I’m trying to be better.”
Glenn was one of the hottest coaching prospects in the league entering this hiring cycle. Meanwhile, Mougey is an up and coming young front office mind. So it’s possible that this is the first step in the right direction toward Johnson fixing the team. Johnson still has a lot of work to do. And maybe that involves keeping his young sons far, far away from the organization. But the first step toward fixing any problem is acknowledging that you have one, and he finally appears to have done just that.
