The New York Jets are spicing up their special teams competition with a hefty dose of leg power. Harrison Mevis, nicknamed the “Thiccer Kicker” for both his size and swagger, is heading to East Rutherford after signing a multi-year deal with the Jets, per ML Football.

Mevis, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 242 pounds, made his name in the UFL this spring as one of the league’s most accurate and reliable kickers.

Fresh off a standout campaign with the Birmingham Stallions, Mevis nailed 20 of his 21 field goal attempts, including a long from 54 yards. He tied former NFL kicker Rodrigo Blankenship for the best field goal percentage in the league. The Jets noticed and are giving the 23-year-old Missouri native a real shot to earn a spot on their NFL roster.

Kicking Competition Heats Up In New York

The arrival of Mevis turns what was a quiet position battle into one of the more intriguing storylines heading into Jets training camp. Anders Carlson, who performed well in five games for New York in 2024, currently holds the inside track. But with Mevis in the fold, the job is anything but locked up.

Caden Davis also remains on the roster, though his path to a Week 1 spot just got significantly tougher. Mevis brings not only consistency but also a booming leg and big-game experience from the UFL playoffs. His addition adds real pressure on Carlson to maintain his edge.

While the attention remains on quarterback play and Breece Hall’s bounce-back campaign, special teams often becomes the difference in close games. If Mevis continues his hot streak into the summer, he could follow in the footsteps of former UFL standout Jake Bates, who made the jump to the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

For Mevis, the journey from Birmingham to the Big Apple marks more than just a contract. It’s the next step in proving he belongs in the league for good. And for the Jets, it’s a low-risk move with serious upside if Mevis can bring the same energy and execution to Sundays this fall.
