The New York Jets signed Kris Boyd in the offseason to be a special teams ace for them. It didn’t work out that way. Boyd was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury in August 2025 and he did not play for the Jets this season. He was an afterthought for Jets fans until mid-November, when Boyd was out at a club in New York City. He was there with some friends when they got into an altercation with another group of people, and Boyd ended up shot. The bullet lodged in his aortic artery and nearly killed him. He had multiple surgeries and is on the road to recovery now. Yesterday Boyd surprised his teammates by showing up unannounced at the Jets facility and attending special teams meetings.
We root for our teams and criticize our teams and the players. It’s easy to lose sight of the simple fact that these are human beings, fellow travelers for the briefest of times on this tiny rock in a vast universe. For Boyd, his time was almost up. A centimeter or two on a slightly different trajectory and that bullet would have ended his life. Now he appears to be well on the road to recovery. Life is fragile. We sometimes lose sight of that. Kris Boyd got a glimpse up close and personal. Thankfully he didn’t slip out of the human fraternity.
