Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets made good on their promise of accountability yesterday. After Xavier Gipson made a costly error, fumbling a kickoff and giving the Pittsburgh Steelers a short field to score a touchdown on Sunday, Gipson was cut. The Jets replaced him by signing receiver/returner Isaiah Williams, a 24 year old second year pro last employed by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Gipson obviously wasn’t the first Jet ever to turn the ball over, and he won’t be the last. There will be multiple turnovers by Jets this year, as there are every year. Most won’t be followed up by cutting the offender. Gipson was already a fringe player on thin ice with the staff. The fumble was just the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. When a more established star coughs the ball up, they won’t be cut. Nonetheless, it’s nice to see something beyond rhetoric when the team talks about accountability. Gipson is gone. Williams is here. If he doesn’t work out, presumably somebody else will be brought in until the Jets find somebody they can trust. It’s a relatively minor move, but it’s progress.
