The New York Jets traded for two defensive tackles yesterday, acquiring veteran Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings and youngster Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns. The two trades cost the Jets three sixth round draft picks while returning two seventh round picks. Phillips projects to slide in as the starter opposite Quinnen Williams on the interior defensive line, while Briggs should join Jay Tufule and others as a backup. These trades confirm the Jets were unhappy with what they had at the position. Guys like Derrick Nnadi and Phidarian Mathis should be concerned about their prospects for making the team after these trades.
The addition of Phillips in particular solidifies one of the remaining glaring weaknesses the Jets had going into the regular season. Rumor has it the Jets may not be done adding, with wide receiver a position of particular interest. Stay tuned.
