Good morning Gang Green Nation! Newsflash: Justin Fields thinks he can be great with the Jets. Steve Wilks is confident in the Jets defense. Tanner Engstrand is confident in his role as Jets offensive coordinator.
This is what passes for news at this time of year. I certainly hope Justin Fields is great with the Jets. I certainly expect him to feel that way. I hope the Jets defense is great and Engstrand is a great offensive coordinator. But, realistically, what are these guys going to say? Is Fields going to say he’s going to be bad? Will he say he’s not sure? Nope. Is Wilks or Engstrand going to express a lack of confidence? Nope. Every competitor is going to answer those questions in roughly the same way: I’ll be great, I’m brimming with confidence, and the sky’s the limit for this team, or some similar sentiment. Unless of course we’re talking about a Belichick style non-answer, where every meaningless tidbit is guarded as if it’s a matter of national security. It’s not news, but then again, there is rarely news this time of year in the NFL. We are left to hang on every relatively meaningless rep in OTA and every entirely meaningless platitude and cliche answer to the same old questions every year. We’ll see what happens when the real games begin. Hopefully the Jets surprise to the upside. For now, it’s just a lot of hot air.
