Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets

Good morning Gang Green Nation! ESPN’s Bob Solak is predicting Garrett Wilson will lead the NFL in receiving yards this season. It’s a fun prediction for Jets fans, but it is wildly unlikely. Leading the NFL in receiving yards these days usually takes roughly 1700+ yards in any given season. Only once in the last seven seasons has the leading receiver posted less than 1677 yards. Let’s assume the 2025 leader will need at least 1700 yards. The Jets are likely to be a run heavy team, led by Justin Fields. Fields has never passed for more than 2562 yards in any season, but let’s be generous and give the Jets 3200 yards passing in 2025. That’s probably too high, but let’s go with it. In that case a 1700 yard season by Wilson would account for 53% of the Jets’ passing yards for the season.

In the Super Bowl era no NFL receiver has ever accounted for as much as 50% of his team’s passing yards. Nobody has ever even gotten close to 50%. Even a one man show like Calvin Johnson, who had nearly 1400 yards more than any other receiver on the Detroit Lions in his brilliant 1964 yard season in 2012, topped out at just under 40% of his team’s total receiving yards.

Bottom line: for Wilson to lead the NFL in receiving yards, either the NFL leading receiving yards number for 2025 will need to be way below what it has been in the recent past, or Justin Fields will need to exceed his career high in passing yards by more than 1000 yards, or Wilson will have to absolutely obliterate the NFL record for share of his team’s receiving yards. It’s a nice dream, but it’s not going to happen. It likely won’t even come close to happening.
