Good morning Gang Green Nation! The New York Jets have just north of $25 million in current available cap space, and they will add almost $23 million to that figure on June 2, 2025, when the post June 1 cuts kick in. All that cap space has led to some speculation that the Jets will soon sign Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner to monster extensions. That could soon come to fruition, but I’m not convinced it’s inevitable.

Gardner, Wilson and Jermaine Johnson all have had their fifth year options picked up by the Jets, so they are all under contract through the end of the 2026 season. There is no particular rush to extend them immediately, though doing so might save some cap space down the road as salaries continue to climb. However, Alijah Vera-Tucker, John Simpson and Josh Myers will be free agents at the end of the 2025 season, and Joe Tippmann will follow them into free agency after the 2026 season. In addition, starting safety Andre Cisco, starting linebacker Quincy Wiliams, and starting running back Breece Hall will all be free agents after the 2025 season. Justin Fields will be a free agent after the 2026 season. That’s 10 starters eligible for free agency in the next two years. It’s a lot of moving parts, and many of these players are essentially in a yearlong tryout for the new coaches and front office to determine whether they will be part of the long-term plan. My guess is the new regime will want to see how each of these guys fit this season before committing to them with major contract extensions. Gardner and Wilson are clearly the leading candidates, but the new regime may want to evaluate even them before committing to what will likely be very large deals. Certainly those deals could happen very quickly. But they could also be put off until the new regime is more comfortable with how these players fit into the big picture and how much they think these players are worth.

There are going to be a lot of key roster decisions made over the next year or so. The Jets have a good amount of cap space, but they probably will not be using it all on extensions for current starters. It will be interesting to see how the roster takes shape going forward.
