Bringing your daily links to the NFL’s New York Jets
Good morning Gang Green Nation! Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Valentine’s Day is the holiday in honor of a Christian cleric named Valentine, or another Christian cleric named Valentine, both of them Romans. One dude was from the city of Rome, the other from Terni. They were both fairly obscure figures, and they may just have been one dude, it’s not entirely clear. In any event, the legend goes this dude Valentine got himself arrested for marrying Roman soldiers with their paramours, which Emperor Claudius frowned upon since he thought proper soldiers should be single. Valentine got himself thrown in prison, tried to convert Claudius, failed miserably, ticked Claudius off in the process, and was rewarded with a clubbing followed by a beheading on February 14, 269 C.E. Before Valentine lost his head, however, he apparently found a friend in his prison guard and the guard’s blind daughter. Before his death Valentine wrote the blind daughter a letter, which of course she could not read. He thanked her for her friendship and signed off with “your Valentine”, which was the first Hallmark card, as everyone knows.
Now a bunch of learned scholars beg to differ. They say nobody ever heard of this Valentine’s Day celebration until Geoffrey Chaucer. Chaucer wrote a little love poem about birds finding their mates on February 14. Chaucer, being not so good at romantic titles, called his little love poem Parliament of Fowls. Despite the unfortunate name, the darling ditty caught on like wildfire amongst British lovebirds, and ever since the chocolates and flowers industries have been going like gangbusters. So either we are celebrating the unfortunate demise of a third century Christian cleric or we are celebrating some weird 14th century poem about birds in Parliament today. Cheers.
