By all appearances, the New York Giants have hired John Harbaugh. It wraps up a coaching search that technically began the moment Brian Daboll was fired after Week 10. But of course, the Giants didn’t know that Harbaugh, a Super Bowl-winning head coach, would later become available.
The Giants will be celebrated for winning the coaching cycle part of the offseason, but the work is not done. Now they need to fill out the rest of Harbaugh’s coaching staff. Who will call plays on offense? What about the defense? We’re getting closer to discovering the answers.
On Thursday, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Harbaugh’s top choice to be his offensive coordinator with the Giants may be Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
“A big spot for John Harbaugh’s Giants staff will be offensive coordinator for Jaxson Dart & Co. Todd Monken, Ravens OC the last 3 years, is among the leading candidates, sources say,” Garafolo said. “Still a search to be held and a few options for Monken on the table but he’s the early leader.”
Monken would bring seven seasons of experience as a college football offensive coordinator and seven more as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Plus, Monken’s time working with a mobile quarterback in Baltimore could be seen as more valuable in New York too, where Jaxson Dart has never seen an NFL defender he feels he can’t run through.
Of course, now that Harbaugh is out of Baltimore, it means Monken will have a chance to evaluate his options with other teams too. That means he may find a different opportunity as an offensive coordinator elsewhere. Yet, if Monken wants the job in New York, where he’d get to work with Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Malik Nabers, it appears to be available for him.
