Brian Daboll says that, tentatively, players will report on July 22

The New York Giants have set a date of July 22 for the beginning of training camp, according to head coach Brian Daboll.

That would make Wednesday, July 23 the first practice of training camp.

Rookies will report on July 15.

“Training camp will be here in 34 days, so we have to hit the ground running,” Daboll said.

The Giants ended their offseason workouts on Wednesday with the final practice of mandatory minicamp. [Full takeaways]

Daboll liked the work his team did this spring.

“I think everybody’s done a good job of improving from where we started to where we are now. We talked about that this morning,” he said. “We made a lot of improvements in a number of areas, both individually and collectively as groups. That’s what this time of year is for.”

The Giants have gone 9-25 over the past two seasons. They went 2-8 in their first 10 games in both of those seasons. Daboll seems to understand that even with a schedule that appears difficult on paper, another awful start to a season won’t be good for his job security. His message to players on the final day of mandatory minicamp indicated some urgency to start quickly.

“First and foremost, what we accomplished in the OTAs and phase one, phase two and phase three, which we put a lot of good work in, we can’t lose that in the next 30 days,” Daboll said. “In terms of our physical abilities, our techniques, our training methods, we have to come back. When training camp hits, I don’t have much tolerance for mistakes during training camp.

“The season is getting close, so we have to be prepared mentally, and we have to be prepared physically, then we have to make good choices and decisions outside of the building. They’re used to a routine for the last three months and you have to represent yourself and the organization the right way.”

Thirty-four days and counting until the Giants are back to work for real.

Joint practices

The Giants’ joint practices vs. the New York Jets are now officially scheduled. The Giants will be in Florham Park on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The next day, Wednesday, Aug. 13, the Jets will come to East Rutherford.
