Head coach Brian Daboll already came into the season on a hot seat after just one playoff appearance in his first three seasons as the New York Giants‘ head coach. If coach Daboll is fighting for his job, then chances are that general manager Joe Schoen is too.

After all, Schoen is the one with final say on decisions such as cutting Daniel Jones and not re-signing Saquon Barkley, the latter of which was documented on HBO’s Hard Knocks. If the Giants’ ownership group feels like there’s a lack of talent, then that falls on Schoen.

However, the Giants have an opportunity to add to their future draft capital by trading away one of their players.

Just before Sunday’s slate kicked off, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Russell Wilson has emerged as a “surprise” trade candidate.

Now that the Giants are committed to first-round rookie Jaxson Dart, it makes Wilson a prime trade candidate. After all, they still have Jameis Winston, who’s signed through 2026. Meanwhile, Wilson is only under contract for the rest of this season.

While the Giants felt it was time to evaluate their prized rookie, it’s possible playoff contenders feel like Wilson could be an upgrade over their current backup. Plus, with how many starting quarterbacks have been hurt early on, it’s also possible Wilson can still emerge for another team as a starter.

Though there were low points, Wilson at the very least showed he can still hit his moonball shots downfield, even outdoors. Other teams may covet that ability too. Besides, if you’re the Giants, there’s no reason not to evaluate what type of trade compensation they can get in return for the ten-time Pro Bowler, even if it’s just a late-round selection.
