Longtime New York Giants owner John Mara, who also serves as the team’s President and CEO, has been diagnosed with cancer. Following the diagnoses, Mara released a statement on his behalf through the team.

John Mara‘s father, Tim Mara, was the original franchise owner of the G-Men. John first joined the organization back in 1991 as the organization’s general counsel. He received his law degree from Fordham University School of Law after graduating cum laude from Boston College.

John Mara went from General Counsel to Executive Vice President to COO. Then after his father passed away in 2005 he became President of the Giants.

Team statement on John Mara’s cancer diagnosis:

“I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors. I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support—personally, professionally, and medically. I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”

It is not known at this time which type of cancer Mara has been diagnosed with. Nor it is clear if that information will ever be made public or if it needs to be. At this point though, it is clear that the family’s privacy should be respected along with his time and energy so he can tackle treatment.

As an NFL franchise President, CEO, and owner, John Mara is obviously a very wealthy man but with an estimated net worth of around $500 million he ranks near the bottom of NFL franchise owners in terms of personal wealth. But he still has access to the best medical care on planet earth and will receive all of the help he needs.

John is an uncle to actresses Kate and Rooney Mara and has four daughters of his own, Lauren, Courtney, Christine, and Erin, as well as a son, John Jr.
