Abdul Carter won’t be wearing Lawrence Taylor‘s legendary No. 56 for the New York Giants next season, or any season, for that matter. Taylor shot down the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft when he approached him about unretiring the number. But that doesn’t mean that fellow Giants’ first-rounder Jaxson Dart won’t have the chance to wear one of the franchise’s most iconic numbers.
Carter wore the No. 11 in his time at Penn State, following in the footsteps of former Nittany Lions legends such as LaVar Arrington and Micah Parsons. But the No. 11, like Taylor’s No. 56, is retired by the New York Giants in honor of two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms. Simms led the Giants to victories in Super Bowl XXI, after which he was named the game’s MVP, and Super Bowl XXV. But Simms, unlike Taylor, says he’d be honored if Dart or Carter asked to wear his number.

“I told some of my friends and people around me, ‘I’ll let him have it in a second.’ I said ‘Can you just help it a little and make it better?'” Simms said when asked if he’d allow Dart to wear the number. “I think it would be a lot of fun. It wouldn’t bother me.
Simms then joked that his agent strongly urged him not to give up the number, but that he’s not really hung up one way or another.
“First off, I don’t think Abdul Carter is going to ask for it,” he continued. “But if he would’ve, it was up to me, I probably would give it to him.”
Who knows, maybe now Carter does ask Simms about the number. Maybe Dart does instead. But it’s clear Simms and Taylor have far different views about the situation.
