The New York Giants have been looking for a franchise quarterback since the late stages of Eli Manning’s career. They thought they had one in Daniel Jones, but they were sorely mistaken, as Jones was not good at all.
After yet another horrific season in the Meadowlands for a once-proud franchise, they would be looking for a franchise quarterback with the third-overall pick. But, most draft analysts think that only Miami QB Cam Ward is worthy of a top pick, and a new report claims that the Giants desperately tried to move up to draft him.
After Daniel Jones played a somewhat competent season in 2022, the Giants rewarded him with a ridiculous 4-year $160 million extension with about half of that guaranteed. It didn’t work out, because Daniel Jones is not a good quarterback, and he won just three starts in 2023 and 2024.
They brought in Russell Wilson this offseason, but he may not even be a good short-term answer to their quarterback woes, let alone a long-term answer. But, with Cam Ward likely to be the first pick, and teams seemingly not high enough on Shedeur Sanders to take him third-overall, the Giants aren’t in a great spot to pick a quarterback at their pick.
So, this report by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini makes a lot of sense.
The New York Giants called the Tennessee Titans multiple times with offers to move up to the No. 1 pick. They were the most aggressive of the teams that reached out to new Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi.
Sources say the Browns and the Giants, who own the first two picks of the second round, are in trade talks with teams at the back end of the first round. If either team trades up, the expectation is that it would be to select a quarterback (more on that later).
The Giants clearly want to get a quarterback, and really wanted to get Cam Ward. While I’m not sure Cam Ward would be the top quarterback in most years, he is this year, and the Giants wanted to go get their guy. Ultimately, they’re going to have to get a second-tier quarterback in this draft.
