A report adds new and worrisome details to the mysterious death of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Doug Martin.
On Sunday morning, the Buccaneers family got terrible news when a report from TMZ Sports revealed that former first-round pick Doug Martin had passed away at the shockingly young age of 36 years old. However, very little was known about his death.
Well, new information on what happened has emerged, and they put the Oakland police department in a bad light. In the early hours of Monday morning, the East Bay Times reported that the previous day, police responded to a call about a home invasion. Upon arriving on the scene, there was a “brief struggle,” and the suspected burglar became unresponsive after being taken into custody, according to an Oakland PD statement.
After getting aid from paramedics on the scene, he later died at a local hospital. While the Alameda County Coroner’s office has yet to release the name of the deceased suspect, it is the former Buccaneers running back.
Since the 36-year-old shockingly died while in police custody after a “struggle,” the officers involved in the arrest have been placed on administrative leave. Due to the mystery surrounding Martin’s passing, the incident is now under investigation by the Oakland Police Department’s homicide unit, OPD’s internal affairs bureau, the civilian-led Oakland police commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said in a statement to Fox Sports. ”Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Martin played seven seasons in the NFL after being the 31st overall pick but the Buccaneers in 2012. During his time in Tampa, he earned Pro Bowl honors twice and was on the All-Rookie team in his debut season. After a couple of down years due to injuries, he played in 16 games for the Oakland Raiders in 2018. That was his final season in the league, and he retired from the game at the young age of just 29.
