The Los Angeles Rams were just a couple plays away from rewriting history and eliminating the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 NFC Divisional Round, and star quarterback Matthew Stafford was a big reason why.
Stafford went 26-of-44 for 324 yards and two touchdowns in blizzard-like conditions, affirming his status as one of the league’s best quarterbacks. Unfortunately for Stafford, it’s unclear how much longer he can continue to play at that level, if at all.
After a tumultuous offseason that nearly saw the Rams trade Stafford, the 37-year-old eventually agreed to a two-year, $88 million contract.
But Stafford has not yet practiced with the team since signing the deal due to a back injury. And the details of the injury don’t sound all that great for him or the Rams.
The details of Stafford’s back injury are unclear, not only to fans and the team but also to Stafford himself. The Los Angeles Times reports that Stafford saw back specialist Dr. Robert Watkins over the weekend in hopes of getting a better grasp on the situation.
Because he does not know what exactly is wrong, the Rams also don’t know when they’ll have their superstar quarterback available to play.
“What I don’t want to do is set a timeline,” head coach Sean McVay said. “I know he’s making good progress. He saw Dr. Watkins again. … Everything is in good shape.”
Now, that may sound optimistic to some. But clearly, everything is not in “good” shape, because if it were, Stafford wouldn’t be seeing a back specialist, and the Rams would have an idea of when he could play football again.
McVay doesn’t play his starters in preseason anyway. And Stafford probably doesn’t need many practice reps at this point of his career, especially given how long he and McVay have worked together.
But I’m sure everyone would feel better if he were out there practicing. In the meantime, backup Jimmy Garoppolo and third-string QB Stetson Bennett are running the show.
“Can’t wait to be able to get Matthew back out here leading the way,” McVay said of his star signal-caller’s absence. “But in the meantime, Stetson and Jimmy are doing a really good job of continuing to get better and using these reps for their benefit.”
