Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith was seen out of out uniform as team periods began at the team’s first public practice at training camp.

UNITY TWP, Pa. The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired tight end Jonnu Smith in the process of the Jalen Ramsey trade. Smith was also signed to a new deal upon joining the team. On Thursday, reports indicated he was not participating in team periods and was not in uniform.

Smith was initially seen in uniform, according to reports and social media. However, as team periods began, Steelers Now spotted him out of uniform.

It remains unclear if this was veteran-related or injury-related. Head coach Mike Tomlin will be available after practice and will likely be asked about this.

Smith has previously worked with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in Tennessee and Atlanta. After spending a season in Miami, he was traded as he sought a new deal with the Dolphins.

The value Smith brings to the offense is predicated on the high usage of tight ends by Arthur Smith. Smith’s pass-catching abilities made him an asset in his previous season, especially last season in Miami.

Through his first eight seasons, the former FIU standout has accumulated 307 receptions for 3307 yards and 28 touchdowns. His best season was last year with the Dolphins. His Pro Bowl season included 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.

If injury-related, like Isaac Seumalo, it could be held out in an abundance of caution this early in preseason work.

UPDATE: Head Coach Mike Tomlin has updated that Smith is day-to-day.
