Recently signed Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. and wide receiver Joaquin Davis both received their jersey numbers. Porter will wear No. 27, while Davis will don No. 89.
Porter, who spent time with the Steelers as a rookie in 2025, was waived by the Buffalo Bills on June 1.
The Bills had signed Porter to a reserve/future contract on Jan. 6. The Steelers initially cut ties with Porter on Dec. 29.
Porter, 24, first signed with Buffalo as an UDFA after going un-selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. He was waived by the Bills on July 28, 2025 and signed with the Steelers on Aug. 4. In three preseason games, he played 87 snaps of defense and recorded six tackles.
Porter participated in one game for the Steelers as a rookie in 2025, as he was elevated to the active roster from the practice squad for the team’s Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions. He played three special teams snaps and one on defense.
Porter began his collegiate career at West Virginia before transferring to Miami. He was a two-year starter for the Hurricanes and, at the two stops, registered 108 tackles, 18 passes defended and an interception.
Porter is the the son of former NFL safety Daryl Porter Sr., who had two stints with the Steelers amid a six-year NFL career. Porter Sr., who was the Steelers’ sixth-round pick out of Boston College in the 1997 NFL Draft, never played in a regular-season game with the team and was best-known for his three-year run with the Bills from 1998-2000.
Davis is a 6-foot-4, 194 pound wide receiver in his second professional season out of North Carolina Central. He was with both the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings as a rookie last season, but did not appear in a game.
Davis did not have a prolific college career, topping out at NC Central with 489 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games in 2024, but he had outstanding pre-draft athletic testing numbers.
Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, he ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash, and posted a 42-inch vertical and a 10-foot-4 broad jump, for an overall 9.33 Relative Athletic Score out of 10.
The Steelers have plenty of size in their receivers room, with Davis joining fellow 6-foot-4 targets DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman and 6-foot-5 A.T. Perry. But they probably don’t have anyone with Davis’ specific athletic profile.
He will replace Brandon Johnson in the wide receivers room, who was released last week.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS TO WEAR NO. 27
Cornerback Cory Trice Jr. was the last Steeler to wear No. 27. After a series of injury issues, the Steelers waived Trice last month. Before Trice, safety Marcus Allen donned No. 27 from 2018-22.
The most notable Steelers player to have worn No. 27 is safety Glen Edwards from 1971-77. Edwards was a part of the Steelers’ first two Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. Edwards delivered a crushing hit to Minnesota Vikings wide receiver John Gilliam...
