The NFL has explained why Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf was not ejected after punching a Lions fan on Sunday.

Pittsburgh picked up a ninth win on the season with a 29-24 result against Detroit. But they can expect to be without Metcalf moving forward.

That’s because cameras caught the WR grabbing a fan in the stands before striking him in the face.

Somehow, he was allowed to remain in the game.

The NFL has since explained the decision to keep Metcalf on the field. Apparently, there was nothing they could do in the absence of a flag being thrown.

“There was no flag on the field, so New York cannot weigh in with regard to a potential disqualification,” the league said, per Nolan Bianchi of Detroit News.

So, despite Metcalf being caught live on the broadcast, there was nothing the NFL could do, as there was no flag.

While Metcalf was not punished in real time, he can expect a monumental fine and/or suspension.

The 28-year-old made four catches for 42 receiving yards in the win.
