Let’s be honest: When Sydney Sweeney showed up at Jeff Bezos’s wedding in Venice, people did a double-take.
Not because she looked out of place in the crowd of A-listers. But because, well, she’s Sydney Sweeney. And he’s Jeff Bezos. It’s not precisely the friendship anyone saw coming.
Add Tom Brady into the mix, yes, she was seen with him during the event, and the whole thing starts to feel like a bizarre celebrity dinner party someone made up in a dream.
But according to Page Six, Sweeney didn’t show up for the romance or gossip. She showed up for business.
Sources close to the situation told Page Six that Sweeney isn’t exactly besties with Bezos or Lauren Sánchez. The actress reportedly has no personal connection with either of them. “She came to pay respects to the ‘boss,’ just like in the old days of Hollywood,” one insider said. The same source confirmed she only attended because she was invited, and she saw value in showing up.
It all makes sense when you consider what’s next on her plate. Sweeney is starring in an unnamed big-budget film backed by Amazon and MGM Studios.
Page Six said she’s potentially lining up a franchise, and showing face at Bezos’ wedding could help seal that deal. Classic Hollywood move.
Earlier this summer, reports confirmed she’ll lead the adaptation of the popular video game Split Fiction, directed by Wicked’s Jon M. Chu. This is precisely the kind of project Amazon would want to get behind.
Sweeney’s schedule is packed. She recently appeared in AppleTV+’s Echo Valley with Julianne Moore and Domhnall Gleeson. Two more films, Eden and Americana, will hit theaters in August. Later this year, she stars alongside Amanda Seyfried in The Housemaid, which will be released on Christmas Day.
There’s also her Christy Martin biopic, which is now in post-production. Sweeney said she gained 30 pounds of muscle for the role, much of it focused on her chest and glutes, to match the legendary boxer physically.
Sweeney’s stock is only rising with projects lined up from Barbarella to a Gundam live-action film and a thriller with Michael Bay producing. And does rubbing shoulders with billionaires at weddings help that trajectory? She’s not above playing the game.
